Reddit take

AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote

The BenQ GP520 is a 4K 4LED projector that is frequently recommended as a high-value option for the European market. It is praised for its lamp-free design and the absence of 'laser speckle' issues common in laser-based competitors. However, sentiment is mixed regarding its retail price, with some users finding it a poor value unless purchased refurbished or on sale.

Pros

  • 4K resolution with a 4LED light source
  • No 'laser speckle' problems compared to laser/hybrid models
  • Relatively quiet ('silent') operation
  • Good brightness for outdoor use or environments with some ambient light
  • Integrated Google TV and Android features for easy app access

Cons

  • High retail price (often cited between €1,100 and €1,200)
  • Reported struggles with black levels and dynamic contrast
  • Not wall-mountable
  • Short throw ratio (1.13 - 1.47 m) may limit placement options

Caveats

  • Value-for-money perception varies significantly; while some call it 'best bang for buck,' others feel it doesn't justify its premium price over cheaper alternatives.
  • Refurbished units are often suggested as a more viable entry point at approximately $830/€830.

Best for

  • EU-based buyers looking for a lamp-free 4K projector
  • Users sensitive to laser speckle artifacts
  • Casual viewing in rooms with moderate ambient light

Avoid if

  • You require a wall-mounted installation
  • You are a home theater enthusiast prioritizing deep black levels and high contrast
  • You have a strict budget under €800 for a new unit

This summary uses balanced time weighting with about a 6-month half-life. The evidence is older, with a median source age of approximately 390 days, which may affect relevance in the fast-changing projector market.

Parent context: Oh man that looks like a great option too! So you’d put that above both LGs and no concerns that it’s LED rather than laser/hybrid? (You’re right it won’t be ceiling mounted) Reply: Nope - buts its better for your use case and brighter for outside. And LED has no Laser Speckle Problems either!
