AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote

The B35AM is a specialized LED emitter highly praised for its exceptional light quality, boasting high CRI (>98) and a neutral tint with low DUV. While it is noted for being more efficient than the popular 519A in sustained use, it is significantly more fragile. The emitter is sensitive to overcurrent and has a poor internal thermal design, which can lead to the component "frying" itself if driven too hard or used in hosts with poor heat dissipation.

Pros

  • Exceptional color rendering (CRI >98) and strong R9 performance
  • Very neutral tint with low DUV and a clean beam pattern
  • Higher efficiency and better sustained output compared to the 519A
  • Large Light Emitting Surface (LES) provides excellent beam coverage, especially in headlamps

Cons

  • Highly sensitive to overcurrent; can fail or smoke if driven above 1.8A-2.0A
  • Lower peak brightness (turbo) than many competing emitters
  • Fragile thermal design that requires careful management
  • Uses a non-standard 3636 footprint, limiting compatibility with common 3535 boards

Caveats

  • Avoid using this emitter in titanium or stainless steel hosts due to their poor thermal transfer properties
  • Running on turbo mode is discouraged as the internal components can easily overheat
  • Requires specific drivers to avoid exceeding its narrow current tolerances

Best for

  • Color-critical work such as print shops or photography
  • Users prioritizing tint and beam quality over raw lumen output
  • Headlamps where a clean, wide beam is beneficial

Avoid if

  • You want maximum turbo brightness or a 'hot rod' flashlight
  • You are using a host with poor thermal conductivity
  • You prefer a standard 3535 footprint for easy modding

This summary uses balanced time weighting with about a 6-month half-life. The evidence is older (median age ~313 days), which may affect its relevance for the most recent flashlight driver designs or host releases.

Another good headlamp emitter is the b35am but I think it basically requires getting a Convoy headlamp unless you want to reflow a unit from a different brand. While the B35am is technically a 3636 footprint (yes 3636, not 3535 lol) it has a LES that’s bigger than most 5050 emitters and just makes a beam that’s nearly perfect for …

That lack of heat transfer also applies to the emitter board, which is especially bad for the B35AM that already has issues there. While not as fragile as some folks suggest, the B35AM is not an emitter I would trust in a host that did not have good thermals.

However, the CRI and R9 boosts are nice, and the tint is pretty.

B35AM was frying itself even below 2.0A (max rated current is 1,8A) and it applies to Convoy as well.

B35AM is slightly more efficient than 519A in general but at 2700K we're two bins down from 4500K and above. ... Do not run it on turbo especially in a stainless or titanium hosts (poor thermal transfer which means internals are cooking themselves and B35AM has poor thermal design on its own).

Since you say print shop, the highest CRI I’d recommend and just so happens the S21e with B35am is an outstanding combo.

B35AM in an [S2+](https://convoylight.com/products/detail/7544189)for simplicity, or an [S21E](https://convoylight.com/products/convoy-s21e-black-21700-flashlight?variant_sku_code=11957076-10427264-48474524-10427265-48474530-10427266-48474538)if you want Anduril v1 with dimmable / brightness ramping UI.

The trade off is lower output, but yes b35am is best.
