Reddit take

AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote

Avène Cicalfate is widely regarded by users as a heavy-duty restorative cream, primarily used for skin barrier repair, extreme dryness, and soothing irritation from active treatments like tretinoin. While highly effective as an occlusive, it is notorious for formula separation issues that often require manual intervention to fix.

Pros

  • Excellent for repairing a damaged skin barrier and managing winter flakiness
  • Effective soothing treatment for perioral dermatitis and post-scabbing skin
  • Works well as a nighttime occlusive to lock in moisture
  • Generally compatible with sensitive skin routines and prescription retinoids

Cons

  • Frequent formula separation where oil leaks out of the tube
  • Can feel greasy or heavy upon initial application
  • Relatively expensive for the amount of product provided
  • Occasional reports of stinging on extremely compromised skin

Caveats

  • Users frequently recommend placing the tube in hot water and kneading or shaking it for several minutes to fix separation issues
  • Some users report inconsistent batch quality, suggesting a preference for later expiration dates (2028+)
  • While many find it absorbs well, a minority of users reported it caused cystic acne or felt 'drying' despite its thickness

Best for

  • Nighttime skin recovery
  • Dry or dehydrated skin types
  • Protecting skin during harsh winter weather
  • Layering over other moisturizers as an occlusive

Avoid if

  • You prefer lightweight, fast-absorbing lotions
  • You are unwilling to perform 'maintenance' (heating/shaking) on the product packaging
  • You have a known sensitivity to thick, zinc-based restorative creams

Honestly, the Aveeno Baby Dermexa saved me. It was the only moisturizer that didn’t burn/sting - even LRP Cicaplast B5 & Avene Cicalfate stung at the worst time.

She had me start every other day with an Avene Cicalfate+ under the tret with vanicream over. After a month tret on bare skin followed by the Avene still every other day. Then tret every other day with the vanicream over.

Avene cicalfate+ also helped a lot. Some disclaimers: it's expensive, and you have to like. Put the tube in super hot water and knead it and shake it up a lot? I don't know, it has issues with separation. But it's *really* good.

Avene cicalfate+ and zeroid soothing cream were both great for me when I had perioral dermatitis. You have to put the avene in hotass water and then shake it up for like 10 minutes though it's very weird

Avene Cicalfate + cream! I use this moisturizer at night. It’s an odd texture and feels a little greasy at first but after it absorbs it won’t be. You only need a large pea size, dot it over the face then spread it.

I love the Avene Cicalfate + cream for night time and I’ve been using the Cosrx Barrier Repair Moisturizer for day time and it’s also been great.

I also use Avene Cicalfate +. These are the only 2 I’ve found that don’t burn or tingle my skin.

Avene Cicalfate + I always seem to come back to this one. It’s great when your skin barrier is damaged.
