Aurora
Reddit take
AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote
Aurora is a Linux distribution based on Fedora Atomic (specifically Fedora Kinoite) that features the KDE Plasma desktop environment. It is highly regarded for its immutable architecture, which makes the system exceptionally stable and difficult to break. Users frequently recommend it as a user-friendly, maintenance-free option that works well out of the box, particularly for those transitioning from Windows or seeking a reliable general-use operating system.
Pros
- Immutable/atomic architecture makes the system virtually unbreakable and maintenance-free.
- Excellent 'out of the box' experience with automated updates and integrated NVIDIA drivers.
- KDE Plasma desktop provides a familiar interface for users coming from Windows.
- High compatibility with various hardware, including laptops like the ThinkPad P15s.
- Part of the reputable Universal Blue (uBlue) ecosystem.
Cons
- The locked-down nature of the immutable system is not ideal for users who want to tinker or learn Linux internals.
- Not optimized for heavy gaming; users are generally directed to Bazzite for that use case.
Caveats
- The name 'Aurora' also refers to a Plex streaming app for Apple Vision Pro and a luxury resort in Anguilla, which appear in the same search context.
- While gaming is possible, it is not the primary focus of this specific distribution.
Best for
- Beginners looking for a stable, user-friendly Linux experience.
- Users who want a 'set it and forget it' operating system with KDE Plasma.
- General productivity and daily computing on modern hardware.
Avoid if
- You want to deeply customize or 'screw around' with system-level files to learn how Linux works.
- Your primary use case is heavy gaming (Bazzite is the recommended alternative).
This summary uses balanced time weighting with about a 6-month half-life. The evidence is older, with a median source age of approximately 382 days, which may not reflect the very latest updates to the software.

Take a look at Aurora. Pretty much fulfills all your requirements.
Otherwise I'd recommend Linux mint or Ubuntu for starters, or even aurora.
Aurora by Kim Stanley Robinson. The guy thought of absolutely everything that might go wrong on a generation ship.
recently switched over to it's less GAMER focused cousin, Aurora. I then added back the gaming-specific aspects of Bazzite I wanted to retain. Both are atomic KDE versions of Fedora... Both Bazzite/Aurora have been very stable with no issues so far
You can go for kinoite or aurora and then use distrobox for pacman and AUR
Aurora was cool, but mostly focused on the humans.
a distro that is great for this is Aurora by uBlue, it comes with nvidia drivers and codecs based on fedora kinoite. It is very stable since updates cannot be partially complete and you can easily boot into your previous image if something goes wrong. The development experience includes VSCode proper with Dev containers, docker and podman for containerised development.
Reputable operators include Quark, Polar Latitudes, G Adventures, Lindblad and Aurora.
I also don't recommend immutable distros because eventually OP might want to change *anything at all* in the system, and immutable distros add a lot of friction to anything.
Maybe pick a distro with ootb suport for nvidia: ultramarine, aurora, bluefin. Aurora (kde) and blufin (gnome) come with dx flavors, basically few added coding tolls built in.
