Ark Nova
Reddit take
AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote
Ark Nova is a highly acclaimed heavy Euro game centered on zoo management, frequently compared to Terraforming Mars and Wingspan for its card-driven engine building. It is widely praised for its innovative action-selection system where the strength of an action depends on how long a player waits to use it. While it is considered a modern classic in the board gaming community, it is also known for its significant length and 'multiplayer solitaire' feel.
Pros
- Innovative action-selection mechanic where power scales with timing
- High replayability with a massive deck of unique cards
- Strongly recommended for fans of engine-builders like Terraforming Mars
- Excellent 2-player experience that can be played in under 90 minutes by experienced players
Cons
- Significant playtime that can exceed 3-4 hours, especially at 4 players
- Low player interaction, leading to a 'multiplayer solitaire' experience
- Complex rules and systems can be daunting for those who dislike heavy games
- Prone to Analysis Paralysis (AP), resulting in long individual turns
Caveats
- Playtime varies wildly based on player experience and count
- The theme can feel abstract or disconnected from the mechanics for some players
- Opinions are mixed on the Marine World expansion; some consider it essential while others find the base game sufficient
Best for
- Heavy Euro game enthusiasts
- Fans of complex engine-building and card-driven strategy
- Players looking for a deep 2-player competitive experience
Avoid if
- You prefer high-interaction games with significant player conflict
- You have a limited time window for gaming sessions
- You find complex, multi-layered rule systems frustrating

Ark Nova for me. So much possibilities.
I play a lot of medium-heavy games and this is closer to ticket to ride than it is to something like Ark Nova or a Lacerda. Dead streamlined and rules light.
