Ardupilot is your way to go, if you want the copter police safe and cost efficient.
Also, for autonomous missions, stick with ardupilot.
For your drone, being on the bigger end of things, I'd suggest sticking with Ardupilot.
QGroundControl, MAVlink, ArduPilot, DroneDeploy, and those are just a few you might work with on any given project.
Designing a flight controller PCB is no easy feat, it requires a lot of attention to resource allocation, power supply, and ideally following some form of standardized guideline system, be it for Betaflight, Ardupilot or PX4.
It is rock solid in autopilot mode. Ardupilot eases into and out of the waypoints so smoothly the can doesn't swing at all, it's brilliant.
Your compass may be physically built into the your GPS, but they are two separate sensors for ArduPilot.
My hope is some US hardware companies emerge that fully leverage the open source software stack (Ardupilot, PX4, QGroundcontrol, etc)

I particularly would suggest ArduPilot as their [LUA scripting](https://ardupilot.org/copter/docs/common-lua-scripts.html) makes customization pretty easy (no need to deeply understand the large and complex codebase). I have personally used this to add custom I2C sensors and log their data.
