Arcs

AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote
Arcs is a polarizing sci-fi area control game that utilizes a unique trick-taking mechanism for action selection. It is widely praised for its tight, highly interactive, and "mean" gameplay that favors immediate tactics over long-term strategic planning. While the base game is noted for being a competitive, zero-sum experience, the "Blighted Reach" campaign expansion is frequently highlighted as a transformative, chaotic, and epic addition that changes the game's feel entirely.
Pros
- Innovative trick-taking mechanic used for action selection
- High level of player interaction and tactical depth
- Faster play time compared to other epic space-themed games
- Highly regarded campaign expansion (Blighted Reach) that offers a unique narrative experience
- Rewarding for dedicated groups willing to climb the steep learning curve
Cons
- Can feel overly restrictive; players may struggle to take necessary actions if they lose initiative
- High variance in card draws can occasionally stall specific player goals
- Base game lacks the negotiation and deal-making found in the designer's previous titles
- The 'Leaders and Lore' expansion is viewed by some as potentially unbalancing
Caveats
- Requires a few playthroughs before the core systems and action economy truly 'click'
- The game is explicitly tactical; long-term plans often have to be abandoned at a moment's notice
- Base game and campaign modes offer significantly different experiences (tight/mean vs. chaotic/narrative)
Best for
- Fans of Cole Wehrle's previous designs like Root or Oath
- Groups that enjoy high-conflict, 'mean' board games
- Players looking for a space opera feel in a shorter time frame
Avoid if
- You prefer long-term strategic planning over reactive tactical play
- You are sensitive to high-variance card luck or 'zero-sum' player interaction
- You want a game that is easy to jump into for occasional, casual play

I love Arcs. Partly because I am a deeply contrarian personality (based on what I find enjoyable in life) and Arcs is such a contrarian game that fucks with the player (all of them!) constantly in contravention to every other board game in the genre.
For this reason Arcs (at least the base game) was WAY better, and I actively enjoyed it.
My friends didn't like the base Arcs so haven't gotten around to playing the expansion.
at 2p you gotta hit them before they hit you because there’s no chance to “lay low” so it’s just a flat knife fight the entire time. The games Cole makes are usually extra mean in that respect. Fun though.
The game balances aggression pretty well but there are times in almost every game where circumstances favor the aggressor heavily- you'll learn to identify them over time! This threat makes defending a tactical choke-pointy puzzle.
this looks like it was a sweet game. It's so fun how each playthrough can go so differently.
Arcs is definitely a game that rewards creativity.
Ours are absolutely brutal. I think its because me and my partner always play together and we're always out to steal each others things and it just creates all out war. Great time!
Once someone starts figuring out how to use the court, and how big sacking the court can be, the game changes again. It’s the best.
Arcs, Inis, and Dune are all games you could go really deep on and play over and over again
