Reddit take

AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote

The Apple M3 Pro is generally praised as a high-performance chip that offers a significant step up from base models, particularly for video editing and multitasking. Users highlight its 'editing beast' capabilities and the 'game-changing' 120Hz ProMotion display found on the laptops it powers. While it provides a smooth, lag-free experience for most professional tasks, some users find the performance jump over the M2 Pro to be marginal, and extremely heavy development workflows involving local LLMs or high concurrency can still push the hardware to its limits.

Pros

  • Excellent performance for video editing and creative tasks
  • Smooth multitasking with minimal lagging reported on 24GB+ configurations
  • Superior 120Hz ProMotion display and better port selection (HDMI) compared to Air models
  • Strong battery stamina and overall system efficiency
  • Seamless integration within the Apple ecosystem

Cons

  • GPU performance may be inferior to older 'Max' tier chips like the M1 Max
  • Incremental performance gains for users upgrading directly from an M2 Pro
  • 18GB base RAM models can still hit swap memory under heavy professional loads
  • Struggles with extreme concurrency, such as running multiple IDEs and local LLMs simultaneously

Caveats

  • Opinions are split on whether the base M4 chip is a better value than the M3 Pro
  • Tracking specific configurations (like 24GB/512GB) at a discount can be difficult and time-sensitive

Best for

  • Video editors and creative professionals
  • Users wanting a high-refresh-rate display and extra ports
  • People looking for a high-performance machine at a discount via refurbished or used markets

Avoid if

  • You already own an M2 Pro and don't need a specific M3 feature
  • Your workflow requires the maximum GPU cores found in 'Max' series chips
  • You are a 'power user' with extremely high concurrency needs that might require more than 36GB of RAM

This summary uses balanced time weighting with about a 6-month half-life. The evidence is older (median age ~420 days) and comes from a period when the M3 Pro was the current or recent generation; confidence is medium as newer M4 models have since been released.

pro. better screen, refresh rate, processor, gpu cores and more ports. For the same price it's a no brainer.

My dad have a chip M3 Pro. Comparing them side by side, obviously, my dad M3 Pro macbook does everything +x4 times faster and it doesnt start to bug out or get slow when opening different apps at the time and using all of them.

My M3 Pro is great, but struggles with heavy concurrency (e.g. multiple Claude Code instances running + IDEs + a browser + some local LLM hosting), and I’m expecting my workflow to get more complicated quickly.

I'm thinking about getting an M3 Pro or M5, there's also the Air option. The M3 Pro and Air are refurbished on the Apple website.

I have a M3 Pro which I primarily use for my work and a Samsung S24 Ultra. I love both of these things even though both of them are old now.

I recently got a brand new M3 Pro with 36 gb and 1 TB storage for around $1470, I couldn’t be happier for the price.

I bought three MacBooks: one M3 Pro 16” and two M4 Pro 14”. They’re incredibly fast, but to be honest, I don’t use them to their full potential.
