I’m going to push for Aly- reasons it’s worth the extra flying: 1. most kids will be on winter break. Big resorts in CO and Canada are going to get the family crowd. Alyeska gets some, but at worst, you will have a 20 min line at 11:30am on chair 6. 2. Accommodations suck at resorts over winter break. Prices, kids, occupancy- all a pain in the ass. Aly will be the same, but you can find AirB&Bs in ANC for cheap. Hotels too, as our big tourist season is summer. 3. Conditions are usually pleasant in December. There will still be closures- but there’s a good chance north face will be open and on a pow day it’s amazing.

I kinda learned to ski on Aleyeska (more accurately I learned on a little one lift hill in Anchorage, shout out Hilltop Ski Area) but if my sister and I were good at school we got to go to lessons every other weekend at Aleyeska. So cool how you could see the whole inlet on a clear day.
I went there a few times a year when I was living in Alaska. I would stay in Anchorage and drive there in the morning. Best resort in Alaska.
Bring your gore-tex, resort starts at 250', right off sea level. Storms typically come in very warm. Not uncommon for it to be pissing rain at the base and dumping snow at the top. This makes for the snow to change drastically from top to bottom. Viz is usually brutal until later in the year. Garbage park. But it's a blast if not sometimes a little rowdy, not a lot of beginner terrain, lots of steeps, lots of ungroomed areas. Really fun outer areas when they have the snow. Relatively not that packed. On a clear day the views are straight up incredible.
I had a work conference at Alyeska in November a week before they opened 😢 it was beautiful there. Alaska is gorgeous. I need to go back during the season but they’re not having a great season this year.
