Aloe Vera Gel is highly regarded in skincare communities as a versatile soothing and hydrating agent, frequently used to calm irritation from shaving, microneedling, or sun exposure. While it is praised for its ability to layer well under other products and support skin barrier repair, some users report that it can be drying or irritating, particularly if the product contains additives like alcohol or fragrance.
Pros
- Effective for soothing shaving rashes and post-procedure skin irritation
- Layers well under other skincare products and can function as a makeup primer
- Provides lightweight hydration and supports skin barrier recovery
- Generally well-tolerated by those with various skin allergies
Cons
- Can cause itching or stinging for a minority of users
- May lead to increased dryness if used without a follow-up moisturizer
- Commercial bottled versions often contain alcohol or fragrances that aggravate sensitive skin
Caveats
- Users frequently stress the importance of finding high-purity or '100%' aloe to avoid stinging from additives
- Some community members prefer fresh aloe directly from the plant over processed gel tubes
- While helpful for irritation, it is often noted as insufficient for treating stubborn acne on its own
Best for
- Post-shave or post-sun skin calming
- Hydrating sensitive skin that reacts poorly to complex lotions
- Soothing skin after microneedling or barrier damage
Avoid if
- You experience immediate itching or increased dryness after application
- The specific product contains alcohol, which can cause stinging on broken skin
- You are seeking a primary treatment for cystic or stubborn acne

Apply Aloe Vera or Burnnova gel frequently to keep the skin hydrated
My current routine is to cleanse morning and night daily, followed by Aloe Vera gel and simple moisturiser, my skin generally seems to be happy with this but the acne on my chin is stubborn and nothing seems to be helping it.
if I get a shaving rash I'll slap on some aloe vera gel
I use aloe vera as part of my routine every time, morning and evening. I found I can layer it under pretty much any other kinda skincare product. I've used a lot of different stuff and nothing's reacted badly to the aloe vera.
This morning I used cosrx low ph good morning gel cleanser, then cosrx AHA/BHA clarifying toner, then cosrx Advanced snail 96 mucin power essence, then glamfox black snail mucin serum, then the tonymoly cats purrfect day cream, then Aloe Vera gel as a primer before makeup.
So, I tried aloe vera gel the last two days.
Something else that can work in theory and is way gentler (but of course takes much longer) is Aloe Vera gel (as clean as possible) that - best case scenario - also has hyaluronic acid and maybe glycerin mixed in and apply a thin layer maybe 2-3 times per day. The Aloe Vera works really well against fungai and bacteria (it can even inhibit the growth of resistant staph. strains such as aureus) and repairs the skin barrier by hydrating and delivering lots of important vitamins. The real problem is - as everyone here knows - finding a good/high quality product.
pure water + hyaluronic acid/aloe vera (depending on your preference if not both) really helped with the symptoms.
You might still want to try buying a bottle of distilled water (normally less than a buck for 2l) and carefully rinsing your back and after that maybe only apply something like hyaluronic acid/aloe vera to moisterize without aggravating?!
