AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote
AI-102 (Azure AI Engineer Associate) is a developer-focused certification that emphasizes the practical integration of Azure AI services through REST APIs and SDKs. While sentiment is generally positive regarding its value for software engineers, the exam is frequently described as a stressful and challenging experience that requires deep familiarity with ever-evolving tools like AI Foundry and Semantic Kernel.
Pros
- Highly practical and hands-on, focusing on implementation rather than just theory
- Minimal math requirements compared to other AI/Data Science certifications
- Allows use of Microsoft Learn (with search/filter functions) during the exam
- Strongly recommended for software engineers and cloud developers
Cons
- Significant difficulty spike from the entry-level AI-900
- Frequent content updates can lead to questions on topics not covered in older study materials
- Reports of technical issues during the exam, including freezing timers and buggy lab environments
- Case studies are noted to be particularly time-consuming and tricky
Caveats
- Exam content is described as 'ever-changing,' requiring candidates to stay current with the latest Azure AI trends
- While some users report no labs, others have encountered them unexpectedly during their sessions
- Microsoft Learn access during the exam can be slow or unreliable depending on the testing environment
Best for
- Software developers and cloud engineers
- Individuals looking to build and integrate AI solutions rather than training models from scratch
- Those comfortable working with REST APIs and SDKs
Avoid if
- You are looking for a high-level architectural overview (AZ-305 may be better)
- You want an easy or quick certification without significant study time
- You prefer theoretical data science over hands-on coding
This summary uses balanced time weighting with about a 6-month half-life. The evidence is older, with a median age of approximately 402 days, which may affect the accuracy of specific exam content details for this fast-changing certification.

Since you already have AI-900, AZ-104 is a great next step unless you're specifically aiming for an AI-focused career, in which case AI-102 would make more sense.
Parent context: I assumed getting the Ai-103 would do it but I don’t exactly have experience per say in ai. What would you recommend for me to enter it? Should I get the Ai-103 or do I need to take another approach. Reply: Your CV has to show quite a bit of experience in the fundamentals of SE for your AI certification to add weight.
My main pre-req certs were PL-400 and AI-102 (another one I'm having to replace!)
In my experience, AI-102 knowledge helps only a little. AI-103 is much more focused on AI Foundry, agentic solutions, orchestration, and building AI applications, rather than the traditional Azure AI services focus from AI-102.
AI-102 would be retired soon and replaced by AI-103. So you may hurry to complete AI-102 or swap it to AI-103.
Nobody has ever asked me whether I took AZ-104, AZ-305, AI-102, or any of my other exams from home or at a testing center.
As Microsoft retires AI-102 (Azure AI Engineer Associate) and introduces AI-103 (Azure AI Apps and Agents Developer Associate), the AI certification pathway for AB-100: Agentic AI Business Solutions Architect is evolving.
Personally I felt that AI-102 was not so good
Today I passed the AI-102 exam. This was quite possibly the most challenging exam for me, personally. MS Learn was available during the exam but most of the time it was so slow I couldn't use it. There was a lot of questions regarding code either deducing the output or determining the correct class or API format. I am not a programmer and although I did try, I had to guess on most of the those.
Finally, I passed AI 102... Feels like a life-line!
