Reddit take

AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote

Afterimage is a polarizing Metroidvania that is widely praised for its massive world and exploration-heavy gameplay, though it is frequently criticized for its narrative quality. While many players consider it a top-tier entry in the genre with a modern "Symphony of the Night" feel, others find the experience hampered by what they describe as catastrophically poor writing. It is noted for offering a high price-to-content ratio, making it a strong choice for players who value game length and scale.

Pros

  • Vast world with a massive map and numerous biomes to explore
  • Excellent price-to-length ratio with significant content for its cost
  • Strong artistic ambition and visual style
  • Satisfying combat and movement mechanics reminiscent of Ori and Hollow Knight
  • High replayability for speedrunners

Cons

  • Consistently criticized for poor writing and narrative execution
  • Polarizing reception; some players find it mediocre despite its scale

Caveats

  • The game's massive size can be overwhelming and may lead to players feeling lost
  • Some users report it takes several hours of play before the game truly becomes engaging

Best for

  • Fans of 'Igavania' style games and non-linear exploration
  • Players looking for a high-value game with dozens of hours of content
  • Metroidvania enthusiasts who prioritize gameplay and scale over story

Avoid if

  • High-quality writing and a cohesive narrative are essential to your enjoyment
  • You prefer compact, tightly-paced games over massive open-ended maps

Afterimage is like, a 2023 Hollow Knight-like with Ori 2 combat. The map feels like an Igavania

The mixed public reception for this chinese metroidvania exists for one very simple reason: Catastrophically bad writing. Pretty much every element of this game that involves writing is badly done.

Afterimage, mostly. And 12 hours in, I can say I fall firmly in the “this is a fantastic game!” camp.

I put the overall quality of this on par with HunterX Codename T although it clearly took a lot of inspiration from Afterimage.

Still playing Afterimage on the side, though not nearly as much as previous weeks.

Afterimage is a very polarizing game. Lots of people either consider it like 9or10 star game or like 5or6 star game. If you like huge, and I mean huge, worlds you can explore and being able to travel to like 4-8+ different biomes at any given time then you might end up loving Afterimage! I personally consider it an S tier MV!!

Probably the best fit, it feel like what Symphony of the night would have been if it was made in the 2020s... and if it was made by chinese developers, for better or worse.

But chinese metroidvanias are the metroidvanias that usually offer the best price to length ratio. Afterimage? HAAK? Dragonloop? the HunterX games? They're all so cheap for their length.

The game's writing does have some issues, but overall it is definitely better than Afterimage and HAAK.
