98 Qm7k

The TCL 98" QM7K is highly regarded for its massive scale and immersive experience, often favored by users over smaller OLED TVs for home theater and gaming setups. It is praised for its high brightness and vibrant HDR performance, making it a strong contender for bright rooms. While most users are satisfied, there are recurring reports of a 'panel lottery' involving washed-out screens and a specific hardware issue where the unit emits an audible buzzing or humming noise at high brightness levels.
Pros
- Massive 98-inch screen provides unmatched theater-like immersion.
- Excellent brightness and HDR performance, suitable for bright, open rooms.
- Strong gaming features, including 4K 120Hz support and smooth performance on PC and consoles.
- Side-facing port design allows for easier cable management and access.
- Generally considered a high-value alternative to more expensive reference monitors or smaller OLEDs.
Cons
- Low-resolution content (720p) can look poor or 'underwhelming' when stretched to 98 inches.
- Audible buzzing, humming, or whirring noises reported from the rear of the TV when brightness exceeds 50%.
- Black levels, while good for a Mini-LED, do not reach the absolute perfection of OLED panels.
- Requires a significant viewing distance (13-14+ feet) to avoid eye strain and see the full picture comfortably.
Caveats
- Evidence of a 'panel lottery' where some units arrive with washed-out screens, necessitating a return/exchange.
- The buzzing noise issue appears to be unit-specific; users recommend testing for this immediately within the return window.
- Calibration may be required out of the box to achieve optimal brightness and color accuracy compared to higher-tier models.
Best for
- Dedicated home theaters where screen size and immersion are the top priorities.
- Gamers using PS5, Xbox Series X, or PC who want a massive 120Hz display.
- Bright living rooms where OLED glare or dimness would be a drawback.
Avoid if
- You primarily watch low-bitrate cable or 720p sports streams.
- You are highly sensitive to electronic humming or fan-like noises.
- You have a small room with a viewing distance of less than 10-12 feet.
- You demand the absolute deepest blacks found only in OLED technology.
This summary uses balanced time weighting with about a 6-month half-life. The evidence is older (median age of ~286 days), which should be considered as hardware performance and software updates may have evolved since these reports.

98” QM7K here. Also love it.
I got the 98” QM7K this Friday. I love it. It’s like I’m at the theater.
My 98 qm7k is perfect. It’s so bright I have to use Dolby vision dark at night
So I bought the QM8K 85” and the QM7k 98” which were both in stock and scheduled delivery.
Looks fantastic. Lol to many who thought it was overkill for the bedroom. It’s not, especially from a 13 foot viewing distance.
Parent context: The 98 QM7K is currently $2.2K at Best Buy (with free delivery and install.) I'm debating on picking it up but am waiting to see if Costco 98 QM6K comes back down to $1600. Reply: Tbh I mean you wont be dissapointed with either. But the qm7k at that price is worth it. I promise. Not dissapointed with it at all.
Around black friday would of been the time to buy. Bc I got the qm7k 98 in for 2k. And now its back up to almost 3k
Parent context: Very happy with my 55” QM7K.. took some tinkering with though.. have onn 4K pro and Sonos beam 2 set up with it.. kept getting a pop up from onn 4K pro in right corner and Doby vision would constantly pop up on left side simultaneously. Reply: Same experience for me as well.. Got the 98" and most content looks underwhelming in that size. Need to start looking for 4K sports content. I sit at about 14.5' and even at that distance it looks ginormous; it took few days for my eyes to adjust.
Got my 98" QM7K over the weekend, it's fantastic. Don't have any complaints other than watching any content that isn't 1080p doesn't look very good (had a NFL game that was only streaming in 720p and looked quite sad).
So far, so good. Im playing on the new 40fps mode with RT. Ive only played about an hour on this setup, but everything seems fantastic, and the 98” is pretty immersive.
