Protip: install a lookup dictionary like yomitan and just move your mouse on the word (or whatever if you don't use a PC) Or just in general learn to be self-sufficient and independent in looking up things on your own. You should have a workflow where it shouldn't take you more than one or two seconds to look up an unknown word or phrase
Because it's a bug/error in the recording. The jpod101 (or whatever) audio recordings that yomitan uses by default have some mistakes here and there. There are some really funny ones where the audio is completely different or doesn't even make sense.
But these days the usual advice of mining + anki and yomitan seems to get people there faster, so I recommend that.
Use better tools to make lookups easier (digital manga + mokuro + yomitan)
I personally just use yomitan with a couple J-J dictionaries like 三省堂 and 大辞林.

I recommend installing KOreader, as it can address the few complaints you have/enhance what you like. Kobo devices don't even need to be jailbroken like Kindles. ... In general I recommend installing it regardless, especially if you read content with colours and PDFs.
However you have the option to install a third party reader (koreader) which supports more colours to highlight
I jailbroke my kindle and put koreader on it so I could connect to my kavita library and read other epubs and such that I have.
I did download it once on something but it seemed to have so many options I didn’t care about that I just gave up on it.
If you already have KOReader on there, I've seen people change the usuable screen size parameter to line up with the working part of the screen.
