Yomitan

Protip: install a lookup dictionary like yomitan and just move your mouse on the word (or whatever if you don't use a PC) Or just in general learn to be self-sufficient and independent in looking up things on your own. You should have a workflow where it shouldn't take you more than one or two seconds to look up an unknown word or phrase

But these days the usual advice of mining + anki and yomitan seems to get people there faster, so I recommend that.

I personally just use yomitan with a couple J-J dictionaries like 三省堂 and 大辞林.

I'd recommend to set up some anki mining deck... pick up yomitan and ttu reader, and start reading some light novels/books on it.

I'd honestly just follow a simple guide to set up the commonly used free tools (yomitan, anki, etc) and have fun with Japanese without bothering paying for a service like migaku.

I do mine when reading light novels though since TTU reader + kiwi browser + yomitan is incredibly easy to set up and works literally anywhere (ebook reader, phone, PC) and you can sync your progress across devices.

if you really are okay with banging your head against the native vocab wall with yomitan and feel like you can do it, there's nothing wrong with skipping a core deck to just go straight to immersion.
