For those like me that rarely use sternum straps, the Toshi lets you easily remove (and put back) the straps which is a nice option. Toshi is definitely the most comfortable out of the bunch.
They are talked about a lot! But for good reason. They make excellent bags!
Without having one, the Toshi has moved to my default rec for EDC/work backpack. 2x bottle pockets, laptop compartment, lots of features, and stands on its own.

Tomtoc has a rep for solid materials at a relatively cheaper price.
I keep seeing Aer, Able Carry, Hershel, Alpaka and Tomtoc. I’m looking to get a slightly smaller one, my current is bigger than I need, something in the 15-17L range would work.
I got lured into the tomtoc range and gotta say, I'm really enjoying the little guy. It worked great at the airport and I appreciated the little orange zipper inside. Color does really make a difference sometimes!
Tomtoc imo is pretty ok but less-casual.
If you're just carrying the laptop, TomToc and Thule have decent affordable breifs/messengers.
