Tikal is really special, even compared to other Mayan ruins, and I'd recommend spending the night before inside the park... Plus it's necessary if you're doing sunrise entry, which I thought was totally worth it.
If your brother goes along consider Tikal for the pyramids, you can stay in the jungle and do an early morning guided hike which is incredible.
Consider a visit to Tikal if you can fit it in. It was definitely a highlight for us.

Antigua however, 45 mins (with little traffic) from the city is very safe and so are all small towns.
Went to Antigua and Lake Atitlán last year and loved it! I speak intermediate Spanish and used it everywhere on the trip.
