AI summary — not a quote

The REI Trail 40 is highly regarded as a versatile hybrid pack that bridges the gap between a technical hiking backpack and a travel carry-on. It is frequently recommended for its superior load-transferring harness, which users find more comfortable for long carries than traditional 'suitcase-style' travel bags. Its panel-loading design and multiple fit options make it a staple for one-bag travelers who also plan to hike.

Pros

  • Effective load-transferring harness and suspension system for superior comfort.
  • Large front-panel opening allows for easy access to the main compartment.
  • Available in multiple torso lengths, gender-specific versions, and plus-size harness options.
  • Generally compliant with overhead carry-on standards for most airlines.

Cons

  • The frame height (approx. 21-22.5 inches) can exceed strict airline limits if the top pocket is overstuffed.
  • The 'S' style shoulder straps may not be comfortable for all body types; some users prefer 'J' style straps.
  • Difficult to acquire for travelers located outside of the United States (e.g., Europe).

There are a few bags out there with trail friendly features and carry on compliant. The REI Trail 40 and ULA Camino are examples.

The REI Trail 40 is a less expensive alternative they comes in two torso lengths, gender specific versions and plus harness sizes too. It’s actually an ounce lighter than the Camino and includes a rain cover. I used one this Spring for a hybrid hiking and air travel bag in England and was able to compress it to Iceland Air overhead standards. The front panel opening is huge.

The REI Trail 40 is my maximum overhead option with a load transferring harness. The front panel opening is huge.

The Farpoint 40, ULA Camino and REI Trail 40 are carry on compatible in most cases.

I was able to tweak an REI Trail 40 to conform, but they didn’t look at backpacks at all and picked on the roller bag folk.

I don’t carry a laptop and find the Matador Refraction an excellent packable backpack with a comfortable harness and great set of pockets.
