My husband and I visited for a couple of weeks in Jan, and I was also a little apprehensive, as it was our first time in India. But Kerala was so easy to navigate and we had an amazing time. Delicious food, friendly people and absolutely stunning scenery.
Still an amazing trip but disappointed by the partial sales aspect.
My wife and I spent an amazing week in the jungle looking for tigers and loved every minute of it.
Ditch the tour and just enjoy Kerala on your own. It's a very safe place and pretty navigable as India goes.
Also, the landscape is absolutely beautiful in the monsoon.

Hokkaido is highly regarded by travelers as a premier destination for nature, seasonal activities, and a reprieve from Japan's intense summer humidity. Cons
- Significant travel distance from central Japan; the Shinkansen journey is time-consuming.
- Potential safety concerns regarding bears when hiking in remote areas.
- Heavy winter snowfall can be challenging for those not used to extreme winter conditions.

Going to and from Hokkaido is far enough where you might want to consider flying instead. I've done the shinkansen journey, and it's fine, but you can probably get up there faster and cheaper by flying.
Hiroshima and Miyajima, Sapporo if you can make it out to Hokkaido.
I’ve not been yet but Hokkaido’s nature is stunning.
Maybe Hokkaido ? Cooler temps and lots of hiking and mountains, just watch out for the bears.
I would say that if anything, you should go to Hokkaido at that time which has European style summers (hot, but relatively dry and not humid at all). If it's your first trip to Japan and you don't have any super specific things in mind to do around Honshu, then Hokkaido offers all the stuff you can do elsewhere, with much better weather
