Going to and from Hokkaido is far enough where you might want to consider flying instead. I've done the shinkansen journey, and it's fine, but you can probably get up there faster and cheaper by flying.
Hiroshima and Miyajima, Sapporo if you can make it out to Hokkaido.

I would say that if anything, you should go to Hokkaido at that time which has European style summers (hot, but relatively dry and not humid at all). If it's your first trip to Japan and you don't have any super specific things in mind to do around Honshu, then Hokkaido offers all the stuff you can do elsewhere, with much better weather
But in that two week period originally we managed to visit a few cities in SK and then see a couple of places in Hokkaido.
I have been to Tokyo and loved it, but it was for a very limited time and I would love to go back and see other parts of Japan & Hokkaido!
I HIGHLY recommend Kanazawa and Hokkaido.
Try another island for your next trip. Definitely recommend Kyushu or Hokkaido.
