AI summary — not a quote

Antigua Guatemala is a highly-rated UNESCO World Heritage city known for its stunning colonial architecture, vibrant culture, and status as a primary hub for travelers. It is frequently praised for its walkability and safety relative to Guatemala City, serving as the standard base for the Acatenango volcano hike. While it offers a well-developed tourist infrastructure, it is also noted for being quite busy and having challenging terrain for pedestrians.

Pros

  • Beautiful UNESCO World Heritage site with preserved colonial architecture.
  • Highly walkable city center with a vibrant, alive atmosphere.
  • Excellent base for major excursions like the Acatenango and Fuego volcano hikes.
  • Strong tourist infrastructure that makes it accessible for solo travelers.

Cons

  • Difficult terrain featuring 'horrible' cobblestone streets and very narrow sidewalks.
  • Can feel overly touristy and crowded, making it hard to escape the 'beaten path.'
  • Noticeable exhaust fumes from traffic within the small city layout.

if you’re only spending two nights in Antigua, that means you’ll be arriving in Antigua late on the first night in time to go to bed, waking up at 4am to start the Acatenango Hike, and then you’ll spend … So, like, zero time to explore Antigua.

Antigua however, 45 mins (with little traffic) from the city is very safe and so are all small towns.

Went to Antigua and Lake Atitlán last year and loved it! I speak intermediate Spanish and used it everywhere on the trip.

On the other side, its a good itinerary to travel from Arequipo with one bus to the Colca Canyon for a short touristy trip and continue the trip from there to Puno.

besides the obvious, the Amazon and Arequipa and surrounding Colca Canyon were some of my favorites.

Or if you want to see the Colca Canyon, then I think just one full day in Arequipa is not enough. You could add a day there and cut one from Lima.
