The AMD B650 chipset is widely considered the "sweet spot" for the AM5 platform, offering a strong balance of price and performance. It is frequently recommended for gaming builds ranging from mid-range to high-end, as it provides sufficient power delivery for top-tier gaming CPUs like the Ryzen 7 7800X3D. While it lacks the latest connectivity features found on newer chipsets, such as USB4 and Wi-Fi 7, it remains the go-to choice for users who want a reliable, cost-effective foundation without overspending on features they won't use.

Pros

  • Excellent price-to-performance ratio for AM5 builds
  • Capable of supporting high-end gaming CPUs like the 7800X3D and 9800X3D without performance loss
  • Frequently available in high-value retail bundles
  • Reliable performance for standard gaming and daily productivity

Cons

  • Some high-end B650 models are priced too closely to newer X870 boards, diminishing their value
  • mATX versions may have limited I/O and RAM expansion slots compared to full ATX boards
  • May require a BIOS update to support newer Ryzen 9000 series processors

For the rest, you don’t need to overthink it too much — just grab a decent B650 board, a good 750W gold PSU, and a solid air cooler and you’re set.

Get a Ryzen 7 7800X3D, RTX 4070, B650 board, 32GB DDR5, 1-2TB NVMe, 750W PSU, and a good case with airflow. It is good enough for 1440p and will last a long time.

I'm using a cheap b650m gaming plus wifi with a 7800x3d and 7800xt, I don't think you're gunna notice any difference, go with the 650 if you think it looks nicer

Everything looks awesome but for the price you are looking to pay for the motherboard there are x870 boards that would be in the same price range. Any specific reason for going for a b650?

From what I understand, as long as the B650 board has DP 1.4, the 8700G iGPU can push the full refresh rate of the monitor without issues, and HDMI is the one that can be more limited depending on version and OS.

The MSI PRO B760-P DDR4 is a frequently recommended mid-range motherboard for users building Intel 12th, 13th, or 14th generation systems while retaining DDR4 memory. It is widely regarded as a solid pairing for i5-class processors like the 12600K and 14600K, though opinions are split regarding its thermal performance under the load of high-end i7 or i9 CPUs.

Pros

  • Enables the reuse of existing DDR4 RAM, reducing total system upgrade costs.
  • Commonly recommended for stable mid-range builds (e.g., i5-12600K or i5-14600K).
  • Features a 12-14 phase power design suitable for most consumer-grade Intel chips.
  • Provides a modern platform upgrade for users coming from older generations (like Intel 9th gen).

Cons

  • Locked into the older DDR4 memory standard, limiting future-proofing compared to DDR5 boards.
  • Potential VRM thermal limitations when paired with high-wattage, top-tier processors.

But I had the same 9th generation and moved up to a 12600K and a MSI PRO B760-P DDR4.
