Pros

  • zagreb surprised me in a good way. i expected it to be boring but it's got this weird energy i can't explain. spent an afternoon just sitting in a park watching old men play chess and it was more memorable than any museum.
  • Zagreb is the capital and the largest city, charming and has a nice Vienna/Budapest vibe.
  • We've been to Zagreb in Croatia and absolutely loved it.
  • Zagreb 1 Short stop to position for Plitvice
  • Alternatively Zagreb and Zadar also have direct flights. Zadar is also a good stop and Zagreb is nice for a day.

Cons

  • Croatia has much better to offer than Zagreb in summer, ask anyone who lives in Zagreb because likely they'll be trying to spend their summer on the coast.
  • First of all, I think you can easily reduce Zagreb to one or two days in order to gain more time for something else. Zagreb’s whole deal is the city centre (Gradec, Lenuzzi’s Horseshoe) and this is easily done in a day.

To be honest, if you want great architecture and museums, you'll want to be closer to Zagreb. Trakoscan Castle and the Vuglec Breg winery were highlights for me in that region. Zagreb itself also has incredible architecture throughout.
