I do agree with you that yoichi is good but reminds me a bit too much of scotch.
My favourite would be yoichi as well! It’s a rugged distillate that works well in many types of casks 😁
For what it's worth, I've tried Yoichi and Miyagikyo expressions that edge out this Yamazaki
When you are in the airport on the way back, look out for Nikka Grande Miyagikyo and Yoichi because they have more alcohol than the traditional version and are unchilled filtered.
Yoichi for the smoki
The Pure Malt is definitely my favorite of the malts, but Yoichi is slowly creeping up there.
Interestingly I just opened this new bottle of Yoichi, and the nose is much more “Highland fruit” style, less earthy/woody than I remember.
While Yoichi’s distillate was able to draw out the full potential of this cask finish, the Miyagikyo couldn’t.
The fancier Nikka whiskies (Yoichi, Miyagikyo, Taketsuru & From the Barrel) are also still a good deal.
if you like single malt, go for yamazaki, hakushu and if you feel you've tried enough, go to yoichi then.
