Pros

  • While Yakuza 0, another game from the series, did the same thing [split story between two characters]
  • Yakuza 0, on the other hand, while it feels notably older and less polished than some games Ive played recently has been a ton of fun. The dialogue to me seems a bit better than what I normally see and it kinda has that Die Hard Arcade-i...
  • Sounds similar to LaD & Yakuza 0 with their biz-side-missions. Once you get deep into those side-missions, your need for cash disappears...
  • Yakuza 0 is giving me the time of my life. It's just fun after fun after fun.

Cons

  • Parent context: I disagree with the notion of playing 0 first, then Kiwami 1. 0 operates with the idea that you've played the series this far already. Dialogue and cutscenes reference things it assumes you, the player, already know about...
  • Going back from the DE is definitely noticeable, and it’s funny to see how it’s comparatively clunky compared to the newer games, but I was able to slip back in surprisingly easily. ... I do think that 0 had the series’ best combat up to...
  • I tried Yakuza 0 a while back and wasn't really clicking with it.

Yakuza 0, on the other hand, while it feels notably older and less polished than some games Ive played recently has been a ton of fun. The dialogue to me seems a bit better than what I normally see and it kinda has that Die Hard Arcade-ish (Spikeout?) type of vibe to the combat.

Stumbled upon the Yakuza series by chance and decided to start with Yakuza 0 on the Steamdeck. This has been by FAR the best gaming experience I've had since Monster Hunter World/Rise. The story is emotional, engaging and well written. The side quests (of which there are a ton) are high quality and offer large variety, from goofy as hell to serious topics. And the dialogue across the game is just superb. The combat is just as goofy and hectic. A bit repetitive but still makes me smile often. I can't believe you can find this game for 10-20 bucks. Absolutely worth it imo.

Yakuza 0 is the closest I've come to seeing a Bollywood Movie game with the melodrama and the plot twists.

Parent context: I disagree with the notion of playing 0 first, then Kiwami 1. 0 operates with the idea that you've played the series this far already. Dialogue and cutscenes reference things it assumes you, the player, already know about. Reply: And Kiwami was designed as a follow up to Yakuza 0.

It basically doubles down on elements that started in earlier entries; two playable characters, each one with four fighting styles, and it is absolutely packed with funny and sometimes touching side content. ... the main story is also a banger.

Zero does a pretty good job distilling all that works about the series into one release.
