2. Just enough. It’s a huge city. The ancient stuff are far away. And especially if you are going to the Huashan mountain. I don’t know what to say, standing on plank of the cliff. Life experience!
Xi‘an is ugly. Don’t expect mutch.
And, most of all, it is a great contrast to Shanghai, almost its polar opposite.
That said, I found Xi'An more interesting, as a city, than Chengdu. It is "older" and more far east city style, with some noise, street food, old quarters and a charming habit of girls dressing up in traditional dresses.
Xian - BJ - Shanghai is like a perfect route.
In my opinion if you’re already planning on going to Beijing in a separate trip, it makes more sense to go to Xi’an then as it’s only a 4-5 hour bullet train from Beijing, and you could also add in stop in Datong/Pingyao then.
Xi’an is actually incredibly rich in history — arguably even more than Beijing in some ways.
I visited a few years ago and the Xi'an Muslim Quarter is full of halal food stalls, bakeries, and restaurants, so finding halal food is pretty easy. The people are lovely too.
I used to study in Xi'an at university, and I think Xi'an's historical monuments are well worth visiting, at least for three days.
