Pros
- Once you factor in subscriptions, size options, color options, discount codes, payments, fulfillments, taxes (and that's just touching the tip of the iceberg) you start to really appreciate Woocommerce.
- WooCommerce since it's free and has all the features you need.
- For your setup, use WooCommerce for payments and Event Espresso or The Events Calendar for class bookings.
- Hosted WordPress with WooCommerce is awesome for 1,000+ products. It easily handles QuickBooks integration, full design customization, inventory, shipping, taxes, and it’s super simple for non-developers.
- 1000 products on WooCommerce is no problem. We even have a dropship client with 50,000 products on WooCommerce. ... With WooCommerce you could extend the plugins since they are open source.
Cons
- WooCommerce → flexible, but plugin Jenga + server babysitting
- WooCommerce is also a popular one but requires more time and effort to run it well.
- Future checkout could use WooCommerce (WordPress)
- Woo is less costly and you can customize and scale it without limits, but it's a lot more painful to configure and maintain.
- If I was building an online store I'd go with Shopify or WooCommerce. I'd only go with WooCommerce if I absolutely couldn't afford Shopify, but I'd be annoyed about it

Set him up with basic WooCommerce, that is your best option. Once everything technical is out of the way, there are plenty of tutorials on how to manage the shop on the internet, especially YouTube. Make sure that it doesn't go heavy on the plugins and maintainability is also pretty good, with mostly auto-updates.
