Wired headphones
Reddit take
AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote
Wired headphones are overwhelmingly preferred by enthusiasts for their superior audio fidelity, long-term durability, and the elimination of battery-related obsolescence. While they are often described as less convenient for mobile or active use, they remain the gold standard for stationary listening and value-conscious audiophiles.
Pros
- Superior sound quality compared to wireless counterparts at similar price points
- Exceptional longevity due to the absence of batteries that inevitably degrade
- No charging required; always ready for immediate use
- Better value for money, offering high-end performance for a lower cost
- Generally better comfort and build quality in stationary models
Cons
- Cables are cumbersome and inconvenient for high-movement activities like gym use or running
- Modern smartphones often require external dongles or DACs to connect
- Potential for technical interference such as crackling or hissing in some hardware configurations
Caveats
- Connecting to modern iPhones requires specific adapters or DACs depending on the port type
- The 'dumb' nature of wired headphones means they lack modern software features found in Bluetooth sets
Best for
- Stationary listening at a desk or home environment
- Users seeking a long-term investment that can last for decades
- Audiophiles prioritizing maximum sound quality over portability
- Travelers needing a reliable emergency backup for when wireless batteries die
Avoid if
- Your primary use case is for the gym or outdoor physical activities where wires interfere
- You find carrying and managing dongles/adapters for your mobile devices to be a significant burden

Weird crackling and hissing when plugged in making it basically unusable with a wired connection (observed in multiple headphones and multiple devices - didn't happen with my old purely wired headphones on the same computer).
Sound quality, convenience of never having to charge them, not worrying about the batteries only lasting five years, build quality and materials not compromised to shove tech into them, lasting a lifetime, etc. etc.
They’re not going to shit the bed in 5 years the way all junk ass battery powered land fill will.
Anything at my desk, wired is superior. You also can't beat the longevity of a device knowing it doesn't have batteries that'll inevitably wear out.
i’ll just order a good wired headset ! tysm 🤍
if you want quality, go wired.
Wired headphones can be connected to any iPhone. You just need a suitable DAC and a special cable if you have a lightning port on your iPhone.
And yes, they are better, especially with DAC. Yet they are not as convenient but for listening to music at home I prefer wired headphones.
I used wired for the gym/runs when wires are a severe inconvenience, otherwise, it's wired all the way.
There are plenty of wired, dumb headphones at all price ranges, from $25 all the way up to $50k. Many of them, at all price ranages, are pretty good.
