Wild Turkey Rare Breed
Reddit take
AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote
Wild Turkey Rare Breed is widely considered a gold standard for value-to-performance in the bourbon community. It is frequently cited as a top-tier barrel-proof offering that remains accessible and affordable, often outperforming significantly more expensive or allocated bottles in blind tastings and daily use.
Pros
- Exceptional value for a barrel-proof bourbon
- High complexity with a rich, multi-layered flavor profile
- Widely available and easy to find compared to other high-proof competitors
- Versatile enough to be enjoyed neat or as a high-end cocktail base
Cons
- High proof can be perceived as harsh or unbalanced by some drinkers
- Regional price fluctuations can occasionally push it out of the 'budget' category
Caveats
- The high alcohol content may be intimidating for beginners or those who prefer lower-proof spirits
- Some users find it works better as a mixer than a neat sipper, though this is a minority opinion
Best for
- Enthusiasts looking for a high-quality 'daily driver' barrel-proof bourbon
- Drinkers who want complexity without paying secondary market prices
- Fans of the classic Wild Turkey spice and profile
Avoid if
- You prefer a very mellow or low-proof sipping experience
- You are sensitive to 'sharp' or high-heat finishes in spirits
This summary uses balanced time weighting with about a 6-month half-life. The evidence is older, with a median source age of approximately 566 days, which may not reflect very recent price increases or batch-specific changes.

But I’d also take Wild Turkey Rare Breed over all of them for $45.
Is it a world beater? No. Is it respectable whiskey at a great price and always consistent? Yes.
I thank my lucky stars that WT puts out a Barrell proof bourbon like they have it on tap. Always available, consistently good, and reasonably priced.
Local has for 40 as well. Such a fantastic bottle.
Guesses and ratings: Rare Breed glass 1, 7.5; Saffell glas 2, 6.5. Reveal: glass 1 is, surprise surprise, Rare Breed, glass 2 is Saffell. Thoughts: this was more clear-cut than I expected. I also affirmed my original conclusions on Saffell: its hard to justify a $50 375ml bottle when RB is better and is half the cost.
Thanks for the review. I’ll stick with the rare breed for that price.
Its good stuff and really nothing else quite like it. That early bottle is also from a tumultuous time at WT.
For me Wild Turkey doesn’t get good until Rare Breed.
Parent context: Great bottle Reply: Same here, it just works as a regular pour.
This is a really good bourbon with exact same mash bill as Russell 13 and 2% more proof.
