I will also add that, especially for the drive up into the mountains, Waze is better than Google Maps. For some reason, Google convinces you to go all the way to the West of the country and up and back East, taking up to 6 hours from Kutaisi. There is a shorter route that approaches Ushguli and Mestia from the East, via the Zagari Pass. This is shown on Waze and is only about 3 and a half hours, shaving considerable time (and fuel saving) from the journey.
