AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote
Airbnb is currently viewed with significant skepticism on Reddit, reflected in its negative sentiment scores. While travelers still value the platform for long-term stays, privacy, and the ability to cook, there is a strong and vocal movement against it due to its impact on local housing markets and rising costs. Many users now report that hotels offer better value and more consistent quality.
Pros
- Access to kitchens and local markets for travelers who prefer cooking
- Privacy of having an entire home or apartment to oneself
- The 'Guest Favorite' filter is frequently cited as a reliable way to find high-quality stays
- Flexibility for long-term stays and digital nomad lifestyles
Cons
- Rising costs and hidden fees often make it more expensive than traditional hotels
- Significant ethical concerns regarding the displacement of locals and the hollowing out of historic city centers
- Inconsistent cleanliness and maintenance, with reports of mold, dust, and stained linens
- Misleading listings regarding the number of bedrooms or property condition
- Difficult dispute resolution and reports of Airbnb removing negative guest reviews
Caveats
- Quality is highly variable and described as 'hit or miss' depending on the host
- Users report that negative reviews are sometimes removed by the platform under 'retaliation' policies
- In some regions, rentals may be operating illegally or without proper protections for guests
Best for
- Digital nomads staying in one location for an extended period
- Travelers who prioritize having a kitchen and living like a local
- Groups who need multiple rooms and a shared living space
Avoid if
- You are looking for the most budget-friendly option (hotels are often cheaper now)
- You want guaranteed professional standards of cleanliness and service
- You are concerned about the ethical impact of short-term rentals on local housing crises

I’ve been with Airbandb for over 10 years, have over 15 great reviews, and have been all over the world with them and never had anything like that before.
Airbnb contacted the host and asked if he would consider refunding as a courtesy, but he declined and said he follows Airbnb’s policy strictly, even with Airbnb saying it was his choice. Airband reviewed it internally and offered a small credit, like 20% of the actual amount.
Airbnbs are horrible and displace local people from their homes. Please don't use Airbnb. Stay in a hotel.
Because Airbnbs have displaced all the local long-term residents from central neighborhoods. And, once the locals are gone, the businesses that used to serve them are replaced by aesthetic coffee shops, souvenir shops, and other tourist slop. It sucks.
In any event, Airbnb is a problem in Mexico -- sucking up houses and apartments -- so book a hotel room next time.
A lot of Airbnbs are in the middle of nowhere in half-abandoned developments.
those have led to the displacement of actual residents and Mexican culture from Roma and Condesa.
Airbnb hosts have evicted long-term tenants from their apartments to create nightly rentals for tourists. There's a lot of anger and hostility about Airbnb, which was has displaced Mexicans to the periphery of the city or made them homeless.
It's incredibly selfish to privilege your need for a private room while traveling over the well-being of the Mexican families evicted from central neighborhoods for Airbnbs. Mexicans have been displaced from Roma, Condesa, and Juarez as their former homes have been turned into Airbnbs or renovated for gringo expats paying high US$ rents.
This is exactly why Airbnb is such a problem. Mexicans have been displaced from the safe, beautiful neighborhoods to the more insecure, less pleasant ones.
