The hardest part is the start. It just bombards you with names early, and they're hard to track because he does the nobility thing (like Victorian England if you haven't read Russian stuff before), but then also uses their real names and their baptized names or whatever. ... But if you can get past that, the stories of the characters are rewarding and his portrayal of the war is fascinating. (The second multi-chapter epilogue is a little much though.)
