I'll never forget how the Wheel of Time's prologue, *Dragonmount,* begins with such an epic scene >!(Lews Therin stumbling through the bodies of his family, getting healed of his madness by Elan Morin, then teleporting away and vaporizing himself)!<only to switch to two farmers on an empty road.
Needless to say, Sanderson was very interested; enough that he says he was rendered practically speechless on the initial call, a rarity for the chatty author.
Some of my other favorite books or series for perspective: Wheel of Time, Song of Ice & Fire, Lord of the Rings, World of the Five Gods, Lymond Chronicles(not fantasy, but feels like it and just plain awesome), The Fifth Season, and Realm of the Elderlings.
