Stop using Vrbo, Airbnb, and other private rentals. There are almost no protections against this type of thing (as you’ve learned), you often end up in illegal rental units, and you support the destruction of affordable housing.
Check out Vrbo and filter for rooms in homes rather than full properties — you can still find the old-school Airbnb vibe there.
Vrbo kept brushing it off under their obscure 3 miles policy. 3 miles is a LOT. People literally book based on distances to go to the nearby hospital, and Vrbo is okay with the owners putting them miles away…
The Vrbo team kept gaslighting me that 2 miles was not too far away!
I escalated with Vrbo support, spoke to multiple agents, including a supervisor for over one hour. I was told they have an internal policy that allows up to a 3 mile address discrepancy, but they would not provide it in writing and said it is not publicly available. Then it cannot be considered a term I agreed to!
This was my first experience with Vrbo, and based on how it was handled, it will likely be my last.
If you book through them, I strongly recommend screenshotting the listing, confirming the exact location before paying, and understanding that support may not side with you even when the listing appears inaccurate.

Yeah no. VRBO and Airbnb are just fine. You just have to do your research. Especially out of the country. Read the reviews most importantly. Talk to the owner, look at pictures. Rent responsibly also. PP is right too many short term rentals hurt the local rental market. Bottom line just do your research it isn't hard.
