Reddit take

AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote

Visual Studio 2022 is generally regarded as a fast and mature IDE for .NET and C# development, though user sentiment is currently split due to the emergence of its successor and the integration of AI features. While many users praise its performance and stability compared to newer versions, others report declining quality in core features like Intellisense and the WPF designer.

Pros

  • High performance and fast startup times, with some users comparing its speed favorably to VS Code
  • Robust support for C# projects and Git-integrated workflows
  • Better extension and theme compatibility compared to the newer VS 2026
  • Useful debugging enhancements such as inline return values in the editor
  • Reliable auto-indenting and core editor functionality

Cons

  • Reports of degraded Intellisense and package suggestions, often replaced by unhelpful AI prompts
  • WPF project designer can be difficult to use as it executes within the IDE
  • Aggressive auto-complete behavior in specific project types like .NET Core Razor
  • Intermittent bugs with debugging tooltips and file saving/reversion
  • UI glitches when running in virtualized environments like Parallels on macOS

Caveats

  • Microsoft has reportedly begun redirecting VS 2022 download links to VS 2026, making the 2022 installer harder to find
  • Conflicting reports regarding its support status, with some users claiming it is nearing end-of-life (EOL)
  • Licensing for business use should be handled carefully to avoid invalid grey-market keys
  • No native Linux support, requiring students and developers on that platform to find substitutes

Best for

  • C# and .NET developers who require a stable, extension-rich environment
  • Users who find the newer VS 2026 too buggy or lacking in plugin support
  • Developers working on large Git-based solutions

Avoid if

  • You require a native Linux development environment
  • You are sensitive to intrusive AI tools being integrated into your coding workflow
  • You rely heavily on a bug-free WPF design-time experience

This summary uses balanced time weighting with about a 6-month half-life. The evidence is based on Reddit discussions from 2025 with a median age of approximately 303 days, which may not reflect the very latest software patches.

Problem arise when I open solution C (which use solution A and B), the create repository function / option for that solution is missing. Althought I can change something in soltuion A and push the changes (from solution C).

I am installing Visual Studio on a new Surface Laptop... I have tried with Visual Studio 2022 and Visual Studio 2026, but in both cases I cannot find the Individual Component of "ASP.NET MVC 4" to show.

I saw a post complaining about Visual Studio 2022 downloads disappearing from Microsoft's website and it got an official reply.

But since Visual Studio 2022 and now 2026, the whole WPF project is executing inside Visual Studio and is make coding/designing a living hell.

Parent context: We are a small developer company of a few, and thinking about to replace the 2022. One time fee is more cost efficient for us than a monthly fee. :) Reply: Makes sense, but in this case be careful buying the discounted keys. They're often grey market and not technically a valid license for business use.

Parent context: And thus those people will forever be stuck on .NET 9 or older because VS2022 doesn't support .NET 10 Reply: 2022 supports .net 10 just fine.

Apparently Microsoft has been removing all references and links to VS 2022 from pretty much everywhere in their websites. Even if you search for Visual Studio 2022, and download the (supposedly) 2022 installer, it will install the 2026 installer. They've made most VS2022 links redirect to 2026 ones.
