Pros

  • 100% pre-book tickets to the Vatican museums though. The queue for those without tickets looked like it took hours.
  • Definitely get tickets for the Colosseum/Forum, the Vatican Museums, and Villa Borghese if you're interested.
  • Sistine Chapel, and Vatican Museum are worth the wait. Ideally you wouldn't have to wait, but definitely worth it - imo.
  • Colosseum, Vatican Museums, and Borghese Galleria in Rome.
  • Day 2 we had tickets to the Vatican museums with an entry time of about 8:30 - our tour took about 2 hours and we explored the museum for a little longer so we were out by about 11:00 am.

Cons

  • Now I will say we probably only saw less than half of what the vatican museums had to offer due to the time limit. We were ok with this and knew this going in. The main thing was we wanted to see the sistine chapel which we did.
  • Sorry but if you want to visit Vatican museums you need a plan. That craziness you mentioned means you can’t just wing it and “see” if it works out. The tickets get sold out really quickly and that’s peaks season.
  • If you’re in high season in the most popular destinations like say Barcelona or Rome, pre-booking timed entry events like Sagrada and Vatican Museums/Colosseum is absolutely *critical*.
  • Sure, the Vatican Museums are terribly managed and let too many people in
  • I heard the Vatican museum and Sistine Chapel are a pain to visit in the Summer

Rome felt like one big outdoor museum. Vatican Museums, St Peters, Colosseum, Pantheon, Borghese over three days which was busy but manageable honestly.
