Pros

  • Congratulations!!! But now you will be addicted, and will buy a UDM Pro and a UNAS lol like I did
  • Using the UNAS as a base worked surprisingly well for rack mounting gear without a rack
  • The UNAS beats the pants off the Xserve RAID in every possible way other than raw disk count. Even with fewer drive bays, the UNAS has 28x the raw storage capacity, has built-in file sharing vs requiring an external server, costs less ma...
  • It's a $500, 2u, 7 bay with 10gb networking. That package is useful to many and has a real value prop vs competitors.
  • It sounds like UNAS will be a better fit for your Unifi ecosystem. ... However, you will need a box to act as a simple NAS, so UNAS will be a decent choice.

Cons

  • my toxic trait is i've been waiting for a 4-bay UNAS but i can be self-jedi'd into getting an 8-bay when this whole time i could've gotten a 7-bay why am i like this
  • Parent context: You have your UNAS under the TV? Im getting one soon too but im worried about the noise. How is it for you? Reply: I dont notice the noise at all. You can somewhat hear the “popcorn popping” sound of the hard drives if ev...
  • The only thing I really think they should have added to the UNAS is a second 10gig NIC for redundancy
  • Parent context: My biggest thought is why did UniFi feel the need to only include 7 bays not 8 on the NAS line. Reply: My biggest thought is why did UniFi feel the need to only include 7 bays not 8 on the NAS line.
  • Yeah, I don't think UNAS can replace NVR, I mean it cannot run Protect as far as I know.

Parent context: You have your UNAS under the TV? Im getting one soon too but im worried about the noise. How is it for you? Reply: I dont notice the noise at all. You can somewhat hear the “popcorn popping” sound of the hard drives if everything is super quiet, but if the TV is on, i don’t hear anything. The biggest issue is you can’t turn down the brightness of the WAN or SPF+ port links.

The UNAS beats the pants off the Xserve RAID in every possible way other than raw disk count. Even with fewer drive bays, the UNAS has 28x the raw storage capacity, has built-in file sharing vs requiring an external server, costs less maxed out vs the base config even without adjusting for inflation, takes up 1 less U of rack space, and has a faster uplink.
