Ueno Zoo

Ueno Zoo is bad is sort of water is wet kind of statement.

The zoo, situated in the heart of Ueno park, is pretty popular, and one of Ueno’s main attractions. knowing this, my family and i paid it a visit after seeing it nearby some markets. it was a shockingly cheap price at around ¥600, which i knew would not be a good thing in terms of quality. ... the lack of space was ASTOUNDING. ... the cages were dirty, had barely any vegetation, and were sad and small. ... it was the most disturbed i’d been in all of japan.

The zoo itself was a little disappointing and depressing. Animal enclosures seemed too small to me.

I'm not sure what you're used to from zoos, but from a Western European point of view Ueno does have some nice enclosures, but most are... ugh too outright horrible.

Ueno Zoo - could have easily skipped as well.

I went in 2016 with my mom and sister and we left really rather upset since some of the animals looked really sad/depressed and the enclosures were quite small.

Ueno Zoo, like most animal-related things in Japan, is depressing. Very few animals have acceptable exhibits by modern western standards. I went while living in Tokyo as it was probably the one time I was ever going to see Giant Panda and I don't recommend it.
