Reddit take

AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote

Opinions on Turo are mixed, with users highlighting the platform's utility for renting specific vehicles from individuals while expressing significant concerns regarding post-rental disputes. While some travelers find it a viable alternative to traditional agencies for long-term stays, others warn of a 'messier' experience and potential for unexpected charges.

Pros

  • Allows for the rental of specific car models from individual owners
  • Effective for local exploration in specific destinations like O'ahu
  • Serves as a functional alternative to traditional rental fleets

Cons

  • Risk of 'scam charges' or disputed fees after the vehicle is returned
  • Generally incompatible with one-way travel requirements
  • Peer-to-peer nature can lead to more complex or 'messy' logistical issues
  • Pricing in some major cities can be as high as traditional rental or car-sharing services

Caveats

  • The experience relies heavily on interactions with individual hosts rather than a centralized company fleet
  • Post-rental billing disputes are a noted point of friction for some users

Best for

  • Travelers who want a specific make or model of car
  • Long-term stays in a single location where a local vehicle is necessary

Avoid if

  • You are planning a one-way trip
  • You prefer the standardized insurance and dispute processes of major rental agencies

If I'm not mistaken Turo is basically renting from individuals and borrowing their car. Way more messy and way more chance of possible issues.

I'm utterly floored by prices in DC - $500 on Kayak, $400 on Turo, same on Zipcar.

To fully enjoy O'ahu, you should definitely rent a car (we chose Turo) and book your stay for at least two weeks, as there is so much to do and see.

Have used before, but for a one way, 1.5 hour drive, doesn't really work. Unless I'm missing something. The one way part kinda ruins it.
