I prefer Aruba, but I think for what you’re looking for, Turks may be the better choice.
Some of the more well kept islands I’ve been to and enjoyed are grand cayman, Bermuda ( not Caribbean), Aruba, Turks and Caicos and Anguilla.
TCI for sure. Rent a car, beach hop. Some of the most beautiful beaches and water in the Caribbean. The main touristy part still feels nice without having American chains everywhere.
turks and caicos. direct flights from DC, the water is unreal and your 5yo will lose their mind on grace bay beach. you can find solid resort deals in late march for a family of three under $6k if you book soon - try the alexandra resort or beaches turks for kid-friendly options.

Grace Bay at Turks and Caicos is easily the best water/sand/beach I’ve ever been to and it’s not even close. Drawbacks- pretty expensive and airport sucks.
Turks and Caicos is hard to beat for safety and beaches. Grace Bay is calm and great for kids, and there are both all-inclusive options like Beaches Turks and Caicos and quieter resorts like The Palms or The Somerset. Spring is usually good for avoiding seaweed too.
Turks and Caicos for sure. Aruba is known for windsurfing. I kept getting stung by the flying sand there.
