AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote

Tulum is a highly polarizing destination that draws praise for its aesthetic beauty and nightlife but faces heavy criticism for its high costs and infrastructure issues. While some travelers enjoy the serene boutique hotels and proximity to cenotes, many others describe it as an overpriced, pretentious "nightmare" dominated by influencer culture and bachelorette parties.

Pros

  • Proximity to world-class cenotes and the Chichen Itza ruins
  • Vibrant nightlife and party scene
  • Beautiful beaches and high-end, serene boutique hotels
  • Walkable restaurant districts within specific hotel zones

Cons

  • Significantly more expensive than other Mexican destinations
  • Poor infrastructure and difficult transportation without a car
  • Heavy presence of "influencer" and bachelorette party crowds
  • Seasonal sargassum (seaweed) can ruin beach conditions

Caveats

  • Safety reports are inconsistent, ranging from accounts of rare incidents to specific reports of road blockages
  • Service quality is frequently described as poor relative to the high prices
  • The area can feel "overhyped" and less authentic compared to cities like Oaxaca or CDMX

Best for

  • High-budget travelers seeking a luxury party atmosphere
  • Short stays focused on visiting cenotes and ruins
  • Travelers prioritizing aesthetic and "Instagrammable" environments

Avoid if

  • You are traveling on a tight budget
  • You want to avoid seaweed (sargassum) issues
  • You prefer authentic local culture over a commercialized tourist hub

Cancun is an inexpensive and short flight from Raleigh. From there, we liked going to Playa del Carmen or Tulum.

On the way to Tulum, something strange happened. In the middle of nowhere, the bus suddenly stopped on the only road leading to Tulum. The road was too narrow to turn around, and ahead of us were two cars on fire.

Go to Tulum for a couple of days. Find a few cenotes to visit. Drive to Chichen Itza from Tulum...

Tulum can be annoying without a car and more expensive than it seems.

Avoid Tulum, it's over prices, bad service and terrible infrastructure. Take it from a local.

Like I'm sure if I decide to go to Tulum, I'll manage to enjoy myself, but based on what people say about it, I don't see why I would ever go there instead of CDMX or Oaxaca or wherever else in Mexico.

There are occasional issues in the Riviera Maya but they are rare and tend to be in Cancun, Play del Carmen or Tulum AND I want to repeat they are extremely rare and it rarely affects tourists(tourism is the predominant economy of this area).

I stayed in Tulum for 2 nights at the end. I kind of hated it. The hotel and pool were nice, but it was packed with bachelorette parties and influencer types and was overpriced and overhyped.
