AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote
Trip.com receives mixed reviews, often positioned as a specialized choice for travel within China or with Chinese airlines. While users appreciate its English-language app and access to local fares, it faces common third-party booking criticisms regarding customer service automation and difficulties with specific requests like seat selection.
Pros
- Strong integration with Chinese airlines and access to local fares
- English-language app and in-app customer support
- Generally easy to reschedule or modify bookings in most cases
- Convenient for bundling additional services like eSIMs and hotels
Cons
- Customer service is heavily reliant on AI chatbots, which some users find frustrating
- Difficulty coordinating specific requests like seat selection with certain airlines
- Occasional confusion regarding booking details and what is included in the purchase
- Risk of being referred back and forth between the platform and the service provider (airline/hotel)
Caveats
- Specific negative experiences were noted when booking Scoot flights through the platform
- Users recommend contacting hotels directly for critical information rather than relying solely on the third-party platform
Best for
- Booking travel within China or with Chinese carriers
- English speakers needing a localized interface for regional Asian travel
Avoid if
- You prefer direct communication with airlines for seat selection and upgrades
- You want to avoid AI-driven customer support channels

I canceled my trip and received a 50% refund. It is preferable to manage circumstances rather than be governed by unforeseen events..
If you have to use a 3rd party site, it should only be Trip.com which is a part of the largest travel company in China. They are very good at dealing with Chinese airlines.
Personally I wouldn't book with Trip, while they don't have the really shitty reputation that many OTAs do, there's still visible confusion about what you are actually buying.
I don't recommend this. Obviously it depends on your friends. But in most cases, this is gonna go one of two ways. Either you'll find out that they were just using "I can't afford it" as shorthand for "I don't really want to go", and you'll end up with hurt feelings. Or they'll take enthusiastic advantage of your generosity and start a pattern of doing so.
Best to book through [trip.com](http://trip.com) as they are a Chinese company that has a great English app, access to local fares and English speaking in-app customer support if things like this happen. They also allow you to easily reschedule without talking to anyone in most cases.
For important info like this ALWAYS deal with the hotel directly. Never trust a 3rd Party Booking Platform for this kind of specific information.
Yeah I have done it many times, paid for most of the trip for friend to have them accompany me.
So I'm booking accommodation for a family of 4 (2 adults and 2 kids) and i'm a little bit confused about how [trip.com] works.
Dear all, please do not book on Trip.com unless you love chatting with AI. We have definitely entered a new era from horrible customer service assistant to no service.
So far if there’s cancellation or flight changes with Trip its so easy to modify my booking. I only have this issue with Scoot but never with any other airline.
