My problem with This War of Mine is I eventually became too good at it. It's great early on when you're just barely managing and any little setback feels like a disaster. The tone really works (in that it's bleak and horrible but in exactly the way it should be) But eventually I had a nice base going, I knew what to prioritise, I knew how to scavenge fairly safely, and I had enough resources stockpiled that I didn't need to take big risks. In most survival games that would be fine as long as it doesn't happen too early, but in a game that's supposed to feel bleak and oppressive, it does kind of kill the tone.

I think I've found the reason why I detest TWoM's gameplay so much: I've called it the "Doomed Playthrough" syndrome. ... In TWoM, however, the game does force you to live through your mistakes and be subject of the harsh reality of war, which is neat for a social messaging angle, but isn't good from a piece of entertainment value.
