I enjoyed the book quite a lot, as I've been enjoying most of what Ilona Andrews have written, but I think the story had more issues than info-dumping. ... what works well in urban fantasy worked for me way less in an epic fantasy setting. The fact that the big climax of the book is like 60% her watching things happening from a tower (because it didn't make sense for her to be in the middle of the action) was egregious.

Imo This Kingdom is one of Ilona Andrews weaker books, so I personally would read another of their more recent series before writing them off entirely.
I also tried This Kingdom Will not Kill Me and I enjoyed until it neared the end and dramatics used made me feel like I was reading another book. I hate lack of communication or miscommunication... I just really hated the execution after all that anticipation and build up earlier in the book.
I gotta say I was really annoyed by the male characters. Not just the romantic interest, but the majority of male characters are either sooo sensitive to the female lead's feelings and needs at all times, so very good and galant despite the character actually being described as someone scarred by war, brutal, cunning, ruthless, cynical... Etc.

I just finished this one last night and I have very mixed feelings about it. ... I enjoyed the hell out of the first half of the book as a whole. ... Unfortunately I don't feel the same about the second half of the novel. It focuses more on the Romance plots, and the romance just didn't work for me at all. ... As much as I loved the beginning, I hated the ending.
