Pros

  • I can't think of a game that better represents the idea that the fun is in the journey, not the destination. ... It was enjoyable to solve the puzzles and dig through the mysteries, even if some are never solved
  • I absolutely love The Witness for its puzzles and art style and tend to ignore everything else as just pretentious padding
  • I believe his next game is The Witness, what I personally have as one of the best puzzlers ever.
  • I'd love to walk around the island of The Witness, with all of its beautiful colours and wild perspective illusions. The flower patches and mini forests always felt so cozy and calm to me.
  • But it's a league easier than truly difficult puzzle games like The Witness or Baba is You

Reply: ...it is the only video game I can remember ever giving me motion sickness. I never did figure out why it happened, as I'm not prone to motion sickness in any circumstance, and certainly not video games.

Parent context: Braid, The Witness, Outer Wilds, The Talos Principle... sniff... I can never go back... Reply: That's all puzzle games for me. I love them, but can never be bothered to play them twice. Even if I can't remember the solution to a puzzle, just knowing that I've solved it before makes it feel pointless.

The game implies (and sometimes insists) a philosophical depth which, after inspection however thorough, turns out to be nothing but the simplest of observations. ... the message of the game can be boiled down to something that everyone should learn in kindergarten, just dressed up to seem artistic and deep.

The Witness is all about perspective... I think The Witness agrees and wants me to feel that way. I never found the environmental puzzles on my first playthrough... I was left with the increasingly intense feeling of "this game cannot be just about tablet puzzles if there's this much effort put into everything outside of them".

I've yet to see a game more pretentious than The Witness. Every single line in that game sounds like it came straight from r/im14andthisisdeep

Braid and The Witness are the ultimate example of “pretentious” games. But they are also incredible evidence that sometimes high-minded games-as-art wankery can be incredibly effecting.
