The magic system is particularly bad - it's got an unfortunate combination of highly and technical magical mechanics and theory underpinning everything and described at length, yet actual use of magic in the story mostly ignores that (with some exceptions) and just does whatever the fuck it wants. It manages to be both pedantic, overly technical, vague, and inconsistent all at the same time.
It's marketed as adult fantasy but it comes across more as the schlockiest of YA schlock power fantasy, just with a bit more gore. The protagonist is a ridiculous Mary Sue. The book literally opens with him beating the shit out of a superpowered person despite having no powers himself, as everyone gasps in shock, and that's pretty much the whole fucking series in a nutshell.
