The Saint of Bright Doors by Vajra Chandrasekera: a man raised from birth to be an assassin leaves behind his destiny and goes to the big city, which is a weird place full of brightly painted doors that are never opened. He makes friends and a place for himself, but his past catches up to him in the most dramatic way possible.
On the bright side, there's loads of authors that do write more thoughtful fantasy books dealing with systematic oppression. (...and The Saint of Bright Doors by Vajra Chandrasekera...)

Was way more into the cutting social commentary of the first few parts, and didn’t feel like we ever really got back to that or resolved it in any sort of meaningful way.

Yeah, the... Epilogue, I suppose- last chapter or so- was perhaps a tad abrupt. And I had been expecting a door to open at some point. But neither took away from my enjoyment. :)
I really liked this book very much, the only thing I wish is that had gone on a little longer and there had been some kind of resolution regarding the bright doors themselves. But it was lovely it was a lovely book.
This is a fantastic book. As an addendum - I suggesting digging up a review that goes into the connections with Buddhist teachings if you aren't familiar with them, as that adds an entire new layer to the reading.
