Reddit take

Not enough linked mention summaries yet; the source excerpts below are the evidence.

Pros

  • Tomtoc and North Face have packs in the same price range with better tech protection.
  • For that cold I would opt for something more specialized such as North face, Patagonia, Marmot, Arc'teryx, Columbia, Fjallraven, etc.
  • my old North Face lasted me about 10 years and was super warm, but it’s pretty beat now.
  • A long down coat from arcteryx veilance, woolrich, snow peak, north face, or uniqlo would probably be all that you really need.
  • $30 Helly Hansen jacket, $30 North Face jacket, $10 Patagonia leggings, $6 Icebreaker thermals, etc. I do find that the name brand stuff is better quality and fits better.

Cons

  • North Face. They’ve really really dropped in quality over the last decade.
  • north face is like the Kia of expensive tents. After 15 years my tent started getting sticky, sent it to the company and they sent me a brand new one. Such good customer service and the tent never leaked even when sticky. Great company....
  • I’ve sold multiple companies products from North Face, Kelty, Eureka and others.
  • Most of the time it's like speaking about fashion to people who are trying to brosplain why North Face is better than Patagonia.
  • any of the larger brands (MSR, north face, Etc) will sell you the fly separately so you can replace without throwing out the whole tent.

north face is like the Kia of expensive tents. After 15 years my tent started getting sticky, sent it to the company and they sent me a brand new one. Such good customer service and the tent never leaked even when sticky. Great company. Get rid of the north face.

for those prices, you'd be better off looking at actual outdoor brands like Patagonia or North Face. Those would be way better quality for that amount of money.
