Pros

  • I’ve played The Messenger, Carrion, Axiom Verge—all solid games, but they each had flaws and I beat them and haven't gone back.
  • B-Tier (pretty good games that I liked a lot with minor reservations): Astalon, [Redacted], Cathedral, [Redacted], F.I.S.T: Forged in Shadow Torch, Islets, Ori and the Will of the Wisps, The Messenger, HAAK, Alwa’s Legacy, Guacamelee 2,...
  • Another (albeit more light) example is how the game The Messenger goes from being a level based action platformer to a full on metroidvania.
  • I had heard good things about this one, and enjoyed The Messenger (despite being in a totally different genre).
  • oh hey The Messenger is one of my favorite games, I do agree about the map being confusing and inconvenient

Cons

  • After the frustrating difficulty spikes in The Messenger, I decided to go for a game that looked a bit more chill, Steamworld Dig 2.
  • I'm happy I persevered because underneath some minor and some major flaws, there is a really good game. ... While the combat and platforming were well done, exploration was a bit less for me. ... the difficulty spikes are all over the pl...
  • First need to finish The Messenger and Sundered, two similar games that I also dropped.
  • The Messenger started out ok, but I'm not a fan of 20-30 min. boss fights so it was a dnf for me, I think I also stopped at the tower of time.
  • Great music, fun humor, simple mechanics, but bogged down by some tedium.

I'm happy I persevered because underneath some minor and some major flaws, there is a really good game. ... While the combat and platforming were well done, exploration was a bit less for me. ... the difficulty spikes are all over the place. ... The writing and characters are very tongue in cheek, often breaking the fourth wall. It was funny in the beginning, after a while it annoyed me.
