Reddit take

AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote

The Martian is widely celebrated on Reddit as a premier example of "competency porn" and hard science fiction, focusing heavily on technical problem-solving and engineering. While the vast majority of readers find the story engaging and the science-based survival plot compelling, the protagonist's snarky, sarcastic tone is a point of contention for a small minority. The book is frequently recommended alongside the author's other major work, Project Hail Mary, and is considered by many to be superior to its film adaptation.

Pros

  • Strong emphasis on real-world science and engineering to solve problems.
  • Highly engaging and fast-paced survival narrative.
  • Excellent audiobook versions that are frequently cited as top-tier fiction listens.
  • Accessible and fun entry point into the hard sci-fi genre.

Cons

  • The protagonist's personality can be polarizing, with some finding him overly sarcastic or annoying.
  • The narration style in audiobooks may not appeal to those who dislike a 'snarky' tone.

Caveats

  • There are two distinct audiobook narrations (R.C. Bray and Wil Wheaton), and listeners often have a strong preference for one over the other.
  • The ending of the published version differs from the original self-published web version due to publisher requests.

Best for

  • Fans of 'hard' science fiction and technical problem-solving.
  • Audiobook enthusiasts looking for high-quality performance.
  • Readers who enjoyed Project Hail Mary.

Avoid if

  • You are easily irritated by sarcastic or 'frat boy' style humor in a protagonist.
  • You prefer character-driven emotional drama over technical or procedural plotlines.

The Martian comes to mind as a story originally self-published on Andy Weir's website, only to have its ending completely changed at the publisher's insistence once he sold it.

you may have the martian and project hail mary (god i‘ve recommended these a lot today). i haven’t read the second yet (i have a lot on my list and i am also getting back into reading) but i would say the first one qualifies as “actively dealing with disaster” and there are some found family vibes

Re-watched The Martian in 3D. I wish 3D didn’t die.

All of this is coming from someone with proper ADHD and someone who can only read fast paced books preferably in first person like Project Hail Mary, The Martian, Dungeon Crawler Carl etc because I can't keep my interest otherwise.

The Martian and Project Hail Mary are the obvious suggestions. Andy Weir literally does orbital calculations as a hobby.
